Memories of Kiska
by Charilyn Cardwell, Alaska, USA
Materials used:
Brushed Samoyed dog fur/silk
Artist's Statement:
My one-of-a-kind wearable garments are created using brushed dog fur that is hand-carded, spun into yarn, and knitted or woven into warm winter garments. A piece may be made either totally from brushed dog fur, or it may be accented with other fibers.
Most of my work is done through commissions for people who want a remembrance of a special pet. But I also make garments that I sell. I feel that dog fur is as versatile and beautiful as angora, warmer than wool, and just as functional. Dog fur produces a yarn that has a "halo" of fuzz, much like mohair (goat) or angora (rabbit). It is a fiber that is readily available (every time you brush your dog) and comes in unlimited colors.
In this throwaway society that we live in today, why not recycle dog fur along with glass and tin cans? Not only will you have a beautiful garment, but lasting memories of a furry friend.
For Sale:
$155.
Judges Notes:
This is a fantastic hat. I wish everyone had the opportunity to touch it. Samoyed is an extremely soft and sensual fiber.
