Handknitting Kerchiefs for the store on size 9 or 10 needles, in cotton or cotton silk mixes. They're turning out very cute. Just a triangle with 2 crocheted ties.
Start with 3 stitches, K1, YO, K1 in the middle stitch every other row until there are 7 stitches, then: (k3, YO, knit to last 3, YO, K3) (K4, purl till last 4, K4) Repeat those 2 rows till you have 63 stitches (I'm using yarn overs for eyelet effect). Knit 5 rows without the increases. Bind off. Crochet ties on either side of the bound off edge. Fun and quick to knit, and they use up pretty tiny balls that have no other place to go. I think they are just 2-3 ounces, but I need to weigh them to be precise. When you mix fine yarns, it comes down to a matter of yards. If you want to use a smaller needle, just keep going until the long edge fits around the head minus an inch or 2. Had some lovely customers in this weekend, and feel happy today. Going to the storage space later to dig up more cottons and silks. 4.27.2001
Making HK cotton, linen, and silk halter tops on a size 9 needle. Using cables and yarn overs for the increases, and then weaving strips of suede in the holes after it's knitted. Ooohh baby! Working on texts for knitting classes. Halter class, tank top class, dog sweater class. Finishing techniques class. Have to design flyers to be given out along with Bergen Street Beat menus this Sunday. I think I need a vacation. Wish we could go back to Amsterdam, but that won't happen for a while.

Found Fortune Cookie Fortunes:
Virginity like bubble, one prick, all gone. Man who run in front of car get tired. Man who run behind car get exhausted. Man with hand in pocket feel cocky all day. Foolish man give wife grand piano, wise man give wife upright organ. Man who walk through airport turnstile sideways going to Bangkok. Man with one chopstick go hungry. Man who scratch ass should not bite fingernails. Man who eat many prunes get good run for money. Baseball all wrong: man with four balls cannot walk. Panties not best thing on earth but next to best thing on earth. War does not determine who is right, war determine who is left. Wife who put husband in doghouse soon find him in cat house. Man who fight with wife all day get no piece at night. It take many nails to build crib, but one screw to fill it. Man who drive like hell, bound to get there fast. Man who stand on toilet, high on pot. Man who fish in other man's well often catch crabs. Man who fart in church sit in pew. Crowded elevator smell different to midget. Yeah, stupid. I admit it. But it's the contrasts and juxtaposition of disparate elements (shout out to Jean Caffiene) that keep me awake. 4.22.2001
Next week in the store window will be exquisite small paintings by an artist friend of mine, Marta. The paintings are a series of three, done in a strong red and fuschia, outlined in black, on a white ground. I'm doing a knit dress or sweater this week to match them, and that will be shown on my black mannequin. Should be very visually arresting. Also going to start sewing soon, specifically kimono sleeved tops and dresses. Spring is finally here! The star magnolia tree blooms were not killed by frost this year, and are blooming and scenting up the entire 'hood. Obsessed with Park Seeds catalog and site. It's starting to fall apart from constant thumbing.

Was greatly inspired to finally finish store flyers, after meeting with ad rep from local news rag, who tried to sell me advertising for a whole year, for thousands of dollars, when all I wanted was a 2 week ad. Hey, it's just ME here, and a tiny store. So I finished the flyers, M's xeroxing them at work, (thanks O!), and we'll post them around the 'hood for free. I'm sure it must be great to have excess dough for an actual advertising budget. Maybe next year.;-> Anyway, worked out the new hat pattern for next fall, The Viking. Unisex, although you definitely need to have a sense of humor. Seems plenty of people do, after the success of last seasons Cat Hat. Have considered popping together kits to make these two. Probably the kits will be available at the store and on this site, as I'm trying to figure a way to do ecommerce using PayPal. I discovered it while buying stuff on Ebay, and love it.

Into fine gauge tuck stitches. Of course the purl side looks great, but if you use a well defined yarn, (not fuzzy or variegated), the knit side is a subtler and more "refined" version of the pattern. The yarn I'm using now is a very fine cotton tape. Actually a flat yarn, like a ribbon, only about 1/8 of an inch (possible less) wide. Have it in coral and lavender. Making shell tops and tanks today. BTW, heat returned at home. Thank you, dead people & animals who watch over me.

One-too-t'ree-faw! Knitting away, designing flyers to promote the store, throwing stuff away in preparation of our move in August to our new house..Ok, M? Tossing aplenty. You don't even miss it once it's gone. Our landlords have decided we don't need any more heat for the rest of the spring, and it's around 40 degrees out, so I'm working on new wool hats for next fall to keep my hands warm, and taking lots of hot showers.

RIP: Joey Ramone 1951 - 2001. Joey came to my old bands record release party in like, 80 or 81. (Pulsallama) I was way too shy to say anything. Using black yarn only for a while. Definitely the end of an era. Might get drunk or sniff some glue tonight in memorium. Just kidding.

Got very interested in ponchos. Started one with 60 stitches around the neck, 6 equally spaced markers, cabled 2x2 for 2 inches, then change to jersey stitch, increasing yo, k1, yo every third row at each marker. Can whip through this, but it's seemingly billions of stitches. Most likely will work out a hood after body is knit. Adding a braid cable after every increase section would make it more texturally interesting. Maybe the next one. Outside pockets? Inside pockets?

Spent yesterday in a vegetative state, left the store closed, watched the rain, and gave my fingers a rest. Do feel refreshed today, and am ready for red glittery nailpolish. Then I'll finish a sleeveless boatneck made of 9 strands red/orange/pink cotton/silks. Shortrowing the sides of the neck makes all the difference in fit. Sure you can make the thing a square, but it's not as feminine or considered. This has a belt that goes through 2 eyelets on either side of two 2x2 cables on the front and back. Right where princess seams would go. But generally loose and slouchy except for the waist. Please stop raining.

Mixing up 8-12 strands of very thin cottons, linens and silks for summer sweaters. Knitting them up on a size 10.5 (US) needle, I can get a sleeveless top done in half a day. Yesterday, knitted the "Sharks Tooth" edging from Barbara Walker's Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns (page 372) in this gauge, 12 repeats. Seamed it up, and picked up 76 stitches along the top, using a crochet hook and the same mixture of strands. Used a knit/purl pattern for a low U necked tank top (knit circularly). Will have a matching crocheted belt. This is a size sm/med. Just make more repeats of the edging for a larger sweater. Length is wherever you want it to end.

Am working on sweaters (hand)knitted purely in a circular manner, 1 circular needle, no cuts in the yarn, only 2 ends to weave in, no seams whatsoever. Made 2 so far. Plan to transcribe the pattern, for a change. The fit is pretty nice. Can really crank these out. Speed knitters rejoice.

Learning warp knit engineering. I can feel the dust in my brain being disturbed. According to my (1966) manual, it's the most complex form of fabric construction known to man. I have found Nirvana.
Here it comes, just get out of my way, won't you? Thanks so much.
