Had a surprise visit from the excellent Ranjit yesterday, so we had hot chocolate at Bergen Street Beat to go, then he passed me bags for my customers purchases. We decided that "PopOver" was a good urban poncho name. I walked him home and forced him to get oatmeal and green tea flavored soy milk (Vitasoy makes it, SOOOO GOOOOD), to soothe the upset stomach he has from being sick. I then proceeded on alone to check out the very amusing McSweeney's store he told me about on 7th Avenue here in Brooklyn. Seeing the Pewter birds feet was my main goal. There was quite coincidentally a reading going on and mashed potatoes being cooked, so I stayed awhile, and enjoyed myself very much. Then I had to go home.
This am I'm knitting felted wood grain patterned scarves for the store, and vacuuming up the dirt Doggie kicked on the rug trying to get any stray fertilizer sticks out of the potted tree in the living room. Crunchy! Yummy! Makes the coat Green & Glossy! 10.25.2001
Commerce is strange and unpredictable, more so than usual. I can't help but try to find a pattern in it, although I know there is none. Some days, I will sell only rhinestone barrettes, all day. Other days, only hats. At first I thought there might be a correlation between what's advertised or otherwise in the media for that day, but I read constantly and watch tv nightly, and can find no such stimulus. The best was a day during the summer where I sold every pair of black bermuda shorts in the store, and nothing else. Got stuck with the white ones! (Salvation Army got 'em).
Got my shipment of black merino yarn in. "Body throw" is the overwhelming favorite, "armless sweater" is judged to be a bit unsettling. During the eighties my brothers had some video boxing game, where every time they hit the opponent, the announcer's voice would go "BODY BLOW, BODY BLOW" over and over. I think of that, and have a hard time calling the ponchos "body throw". I hear it in the announcers voice in my head. 10.20.2001
Don't like the name "poncho", as it brings to mind something that only looks good with a 5 foot wide sombrero. My friend Pirco came up with "body throw", but I'm leaning towards "armless sweater". Got any others? Send 'em to me: stacey@redlipstick.net Thanks! I'll post the results.

Knitting: Cashmere/merino/lambswool tuck stitch ponchos. (on the bulky knitting machine) I'm using a mix of at least 4 colors to get a great tweed, which I then handwash and partially felt in the dryer. (pull it out when it's started felting, and air dry). All knitted at tension 10 so there's room to shrink down.
The colors I'm particularly drawn to this winter are plums, grapes, lavenders and good strong reds. Mixed with heather greys and creams, they make very classic tweeds, but with a twist. Greens always, oranges and turquoise also. NO PASTELS! 10.17.2001
Have been very busy knitting for the store: Merino/cashmere fingerless mitts, felted wool texture stitch sweater coats, sleeveless portrait necked or crocheted lace strapped ribbed tanks with matching scarves, mitts or full length sleeves (sleeves are not attached).
Someone forwarded me a link yesterday to an incredible source for merino yarn mixed with a thin strand of stainless steel, reflective yarns, cotton coated with polyurathane yarn, and other bizarre materials. Oh, it's an ugly sight to see a grown woman drool on her computer keyboard. Here it is: http://www.texturatrading.com/ Thanks, Catherine! Sent away for samples within minutes. It's cold today! Sweater Weather!;-> Feeling a bit less depressed regarding 9/11 every day. Getting angry. Still can't mentally process the revised skyline of my beautiful city. |
