Have started showing some one-of-a-kind knitted pieces in another boutique here in Brooklyn, so have been knitting like crazy to restock the shop. Mostly ribbed merino/cashmere tanks (7g) with crocheted shoulder straps. Mitts and 7g skirts. Really have to learn to use the camera.
Well, everything that was all up in the air came right back down and landed exactly where it was before, the shops not moving, I'm not having business partners (what a blessing), and I can still do whatever the hell I want without having to consult with anyone. Yes, I'm relatively happy these days. Weather is fantastically warm again, and I think winter just isn't really going to settle in. I got a serger for xmas from M, so I'm planning some dresses, tops and skirts in ultrathin wool jerseys and muslin. 7g knitted bodices with silk crepe pleated skirts attached. 1.21.2002
So out they're in? Beer Can Hats!!
Oh man. Kids (boys) wore these in my high school in Florida to show that they were "cool". I really can't decide if the redneck, low-rent value of these toppers is funny or not. Yeah, I guess they are!! If I drank beer out of a can, I'd make one. Might rustle up some from the local homeboys and make one anyway. Claaaaassssy!
Some exciting developments (bit stressful, too) going on. Might end up moving the shop to a larger location this year, with or without new partners. Collaborating with Move Lab (an incredibly beautiful shop in the meatpacking district in NYC) owner Missy on a mixed charm and stone bracelet project.
Everything is very much up in the air. It's one of those situations that could be difficult, yet there is an incredible silver lining. Spending time transcribing knitting patterns and testing them. Snowed here finally!! I shoveled my shopfront, Mia's next door, Nancy the Psychic's sidewalk around the corner, and then came home and did the front of our house. Then it all melted the next day, anyway. My arm is STILL SORE!!! Hi Sam T! 1.10.2002
Knitted Doll Kits by Noreen Crone-Findlay. Love especially the Minoan Goddess of the Bees.
Just found the lost set of Addi size 35 circular knitting needles (see 12/20) in a forgotton box of yarn balls in the closet. Lost for 2 years, bought a new set, and found lost set 20 days later. Now have 2 pairs. An old, old story.
YEOEEEW. Got the Knitting Class Subsite up and running. Mostly complete, what a freakin' load off! Knocked that html monkey off my back with a big stick. NOW I can shower and go to work. I think it's going to be fun, judging by the great people who have been requesting classes. Now I get to hang and share with them for 2 hrs at a time. If you've ever taught, you know that teaching is a 2 way street. Very valuable for all involved.
I feel like a zombie, unable to get back into the work mindset, did reopen the shop yesterday, but really wanted to stay home and pet the dog and think. Definitely opening late today, gotta get the knitting class subsite up and running, at least most of it. What it is, is the additions to the knitting stitch portfolio that I've had in the back (occasionally front ;->) of my mind for years. Well it's pouring out, and there is text to write, graphics to make, patterns to knit/write/double & triple check, etc.
Vacation is a dangerous, yet necessary thing. 1.06.2002
Since the shop is closed till Wednesday the 9th for Vacation, M & I went to see the Xtreme Beauty exhibit yesterday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art here in NYC, and loved it! Highly recommended. I always feel the Costume Institute is too small, and not enough stuff is on display. Mostly these outfits are what I'd consider "costumes", not real clothes. I know they came out on some runway, and expressed an artistic vision, but you'd have a hell of a time wearing most of them in daily life, even to a party. Everyone needs to sit down eventually! But I was very inspired.
As far as knits go, just 2 plain short sleeved sweaters, over some padded absurdist skirts. Jersey. Yawn. Textiles are traditionally not as respected as "art" as other mediums, and I believe within that category, knitting is even lower on the totem pole. Unless you're like me and appreciate every stitch, which you probably are, if your reading this. ;-> The incredible Charles James black and white clover ballgown was included, and this is a masterpiece of patternmaking. If you've never heard of Charles James, and like complex gowns, here's a great book at Amazon about him....you're in for a treat. Apparently, after a Google search, I've found there are no Charles James web sites! I'm shocked. I know some of my interests are very obscure, but this guy was well known as a genius in his time. Weird. If I could clone myself, I'd put up a tribute page. Knitting-wise, working on a knit/purl hat pattern for beginner knitting class. Working on text and html for knitting class subsite. 1.05.2002
Been taking a "vacation" from knitting, but started up last night making teaching swatches for my beginner knitter students. Also, if your into hand knit socks and intarsia techinique, you must check this out: Grace Ennis Sock Patterns. Way ahead of her time.
Random poking around the net looking for knitting resources found that my knitting site is site of the month here! Check it out, looks like some good links: Susies Knitting and Crochet site. Thanks! |
