The high risk of low-risk behavior. Excellent article on Alan Cooper's site (interface design guru extraordinaire) that while talks about software design and marketing, really is applicable to anything.
Will be out of commission onlinewise for don't know how long. Obviously, no email either. Getting DSL service at my new apt, and have heard horror stories. Am hoping to be the exception to the rule. Store is closed until March 20th. One's first step in wisdom is to question everything - and one's last is to come to terms with everything. -Georg Christoph Lichtenberg Keep knitting and challenging yourself. xxxx, staceyjoy 3.10.2002
Very over the top, Russian knitwear designer: Alexander Serafimov The article doesn't state whether he knits them himself or not. They are pretty beautiful. Also, one of my favorite modern knit designers Liz Collins. She's amazing.

Direct link to the page with NeCoRo QuickTime movies. Click on the large picture of the girl and NeCoRo at the bottom of the page. Here's a great review of NeCoRo in English. I really want one for the shop.

A chillingly realistic Japanese mechanical cat, and I'm strangely attracted to it. Perhaps because of the lack of the usually associated catbox. Be sure to view the quicktime movies.

This is the way the world ends / Not with a bang but a whimper. -T.S. Eliot, poet (1888-1965)
Well, my world is not actually coming to an end, but changing pretty drastically. Have come to the conclusion that all moving companies are total thieves and scam artists, at least here in NY. Pretty much concentrating on getting my new apt, (close to Prospect Park!) in a condition to move into. Spent Monday at the Hicksville Ikea with Pirco getting new stuff, which was really fun, until you try to get it home without a car. $90. taxi fare somewhat negates the extreme affordableness of the furniture. Had Swedish Meatballs, of course. First tried these in Sweden many years ago while visiting a boyfriend there. They are certainly not the best around, but you know the way food holds certain associations and memories, they are loaded with those. Bonus for making it this far: Custom Fit Raglan Sweater Pattern Did want to say a few words about the new book out "Urban Knitter" by Lily Chin and others. I hated this book! Why? It seemed like a slapped together mishmash, and the patterns (most of them) aren't logically written. Ms. Chin's commentary is so very condescending, it's painful. Didn't she have an editor? I think it's ridiculous that she thinks she invented things like a reversable cable pattern, Hello? People have been knitting and inventing since the beginning of time, at this point we are only REinventing, or shifting around. It existed before, I assure you. Things like the shoe pattern are a cool idea (not LC's), but the actual execution is so involved and the results non-professional. Big square sweaters bore me. This group of people is a private club that you do not belong to. Cheesy, cheesy, cheesy. That being said, any book by Barbara G. Walker (especially recommended) or Elizabeth Zimmerman is a treasure. I just bought "Designing Knitwear" by Deborah Newton, and love it. 3.01.2002
Prepare for beans tumbling your way...M and I have decided not to wed, hence I will be moving out, which includes my studio. Been feeling extremely overwhelmed just looking at all the yarn, shelving, machines, books, worktables, etc. that I just set up a few months ago. Well, life is unpredictable, and you must roll with the punches (not literal ones ;->), so back into boxes and bags it all goes.
What this means is, aside for a few custom orders that need to be made before I break the studio down and move it, there will be no knitting time for me for about 3-4 weeks. After that, knitting will be carried on with a vengeance. The next person to interfere with what I need to do to grow my business will get a punch in the face. That being said, I've been making facecloths with the diagonal garter pattern: Grandmothers Fav on size 2 needles with Maysville cotton carpet warp. Find this very stress reducing, and my skin's looking great. Circular knitting class concluded last night, and I have to say that teaching has turned out to be an extremely enjoyable enterprise for me. Always feel happy afterward. Getting Doggie, who's living with me, his own pet, a kitty. Major amusement shall ensue. I know he looks like a maniac. He is. But a gentle, optimistic one. |
