"If you don't execute your ideas, they die." - Roger von Oech, author and consultant

Had an incredible day at the shop yesterday, the "Turbanado"s are flying out of there! It's not even cold yet! Turbanados are going to be sold in some other great shops in the city this year.

You'll find below succinct/moderately experienced directions for a slightly modified headband pattern (diff # of stitches, for fit reasons). This is a great project to experiment with mixing yarns and fibers together and for using up leftover balls. This will occur shortly............... Ok, here it is:

Turbanado headband

*Materials:
1 16" circular size 9 (us) needle.
Yarn in one or 2 colors that will knit up tightly on this size needle. (guessing 2-3 ounces?, will weigh one at the deli later ;->)

*Proceed:

Cast on 62 stitches.
Join, making sure not to twist, and then pass the first cast on stitch over to the left hand needle, and knit the first 2 stitches together. This gives you a nice join. (61 total stitches now on needle)

Knit 6 rows in seed stitch ( *k1, p1 *) (start with a purl, since you just knit the first st.)

At the beginning of the 7th row, place a yarn marker, seed st for 8 more st., then place a second yarn marker.

If your going to change colors for the short row inset, this is where you do it. Cut the seed st. color, start color 2, and knit around until you get to the first marker.
Wrap and turn, purl till you get to the first marker, wrap and turn.

Now, continue working back and forth, short rowing by 4 stitches each time, wrapping and turning until there are 8 or less stitches left in the middle of this section. Turn if you have to so that the right side is facing you (jersey side), and knit until the first marker. Cut, then tie on first color, seed the 8 stitches between markers, then knit around until first marker.

Seed stitch for 5 more rows.
6th row is a Bind off in seed st.

Tuck ends in carefully. Wear front or backwards.

Notes: Gauge doesn't matter all that much on this, it's important to have a firm tension and use some yarn with a bit of elasticity. If you modify this to be larger or smaller, just keep the st. number odd. If you're making this in one color, ignore the cut and tie on points.

Started thinking about a Thanksgiving dinner party today for my friends. It will be subtley lavish. I l*o*v*e Thanksgiving, it's the ONLY holiday.

Working out structural problems in my head, which means once that process starts, it doesn't stop until I find the solution. Woke up at 4 am, and couldn't go back to sleep until I looked in some of my reference books. Then slept through the farmers market and dog freerun at the park this am to the dog's chagrin. Partially solved some of it, I think.

Can't find my umbrella swift, and it's driving me nuts. As soon as I buy a new one, it'll turn up.

Ok! Got most of the new 2002 Hats posted: Here Got involved yesterday making a new design for the shop page. Nothing groundbreaking, I was just very sick of the old one, it was almost 2 years old!
Starting a really fun freelance gig this am, and have to get out of here ASAP...

7 HK hats and 3 headbands later, my 2 days off are over. Especially proud of the new "Turbanado" shape. Shooting them on my beautiful mannequin head at the shop later, pics tommorrow. Hope to provide inspiration for everyone contemplating a submission to the 2002 Knit Hat Show. Be creatively free mentally, and the design will follow. I Love Wool! Glad summer's over!

I got my (forty-something) birthday tattoo a few weeks early, just didn't want to wait anymore. It's an asymmetrical loopy bracelet on the left wrist, and I LOVE IT. Just LOVE IT. Hurt like hell, high on endorphins for hours afterwards. I'll try to shoot a good picture to post up. Thanks Liz, for the inspiration.

Really boring Personal Twaddle:
Going through a nice positive attitude adjustment. Came to the realization that not getting married to the X is a wonderful, wonderful thing. He made me *MISERABLE* on a daily basis. There was no love, attention, support or affection there. I mean NONE. Zero. I truly feel like I got out of prison. Took 6 months of thinking and remembering about how badly I was treated to go through all the stages, hurt, anger, etc. I even have some shitty, nasty comments he made to me on videotape, in front of other people, our "friends". You have no idea how bad that made me feel when I watched it and I realized I was being treated like crap in public too, not just privately. I must have been so embarrassed that I just ignored it. It's a testament to how strong I am as a woman that I got as much done as I did with him emotionally sabotaging me at home. Many other people ( my friends!) commented on it to me at the time, but I was definitely in denial about how bad the relationship was.

And then you come out on the other side, where I am now, grateful, relieved, thrilled, actually. I am finally myself again, instead of contorting/submerging my personality trying to please someone who cannot/will not be pleased. I know he can't be bothered to read my blog, never even did while we were "together", so I really don't care about posting this. It's acknowledgement of how I feel.

I'm getting my self-esteem back. I'm not crushed anymore. Please don't post comments on this, I'm just spewing/recording, don't really want to open a discussion. Just send me a mental *Right on, Sister!* and that's more than enough. Thanks!!

Had a visit from some KnitBloggers yesterday! Jen, visiting from Israel, newly blonded Marilyn, newly tattooed Ivete (I've seen it, and I loved it!) , and a living work of art, Liz (here and here). Newly engaged, carrottopped Betseeee came by later, but my camera was unfortunately out of juice by then.

I think that the combination of computer literacy and knitting literacy manifest themselves in very interesting people. It's a certain way of thinking and working out problems and has nothing to do with age, experience level, geography, sexual orientation, marital status, financial status, etc. I wished I'd had the day off so we could have hung out and talked longer.

This is what the 2002 Knit Hat Show is all about! The creative P.O.V. of our group of people. As we noted yesterday, almost all women. I'm so looking forward to seeing the entries.

Washed and blocked 4 hats last night to kick off the hat-wearing season, but they're still soaking wet. Pics when they're dry.

Had a lovely time at the shore...walked for miles, didn't talk much for 3 days, and it was very quiet. Found a B&B in Ocean Grove that's open all year, and am planning to go back for a whole week soon. The architecture is charming, wooden gingerbread covered cottages with wildflower gardens on twisting streets right on the ocean. It's a religeous community, but no-one tried to convert me. People moved slowly, but with purpose. I didn't have to hear hip-hop blasting from a car or any other music or TV for 2 and a half days. No phone. No email.

By the way, Stay the fuck away from Asbury Park! It's worse than EVER> Sleazy doesn't cover it, it's now extremely dangerous, and the one time I wandered over there on the boardwalk to see what was going on, I ended up running away (in flip-flops!) from would be muggers (or worse). There are, inexplicably, new antique shops, art galleries and restaurants opening up on Cookman Avenue near the train station, but further in, towards the shore, is still very "Night of the Living Dead". I assure you I'm not exaggerating.

Now it's time to get to work. OF COURSE I brought knitting! I lied! I was knitting in Penn Station before I even got out of town. Started making helmets with an asymmetrical woven cable going around one side, and a zig-zag edged cloche. I only brought one circular needle, couldn't finish the tops off with DP's till I came home. Will post pics of these when they're done.

Ok. Apparently, Elvis was a Jew!

8.15.2002
Suffering from sweaty, thick of summer ennui, can't seem to focus on much, and definitely not getting any projects completed. Taking a desperately needed 2 day vacation in Asbury Park, NJ, this coming Mon & Tue. Not bringing a laptop or any knitting. Last time I was in Asbury, it was *beyond* seedy, but have heard that it's been commandeered by the gay community in recent years. Fab! Maybe now I can find some decent coffee there. I have very nostalgic memories, my old girl-band opened for the Clash 5 times at the Convention Center, it was pretty amazing. I used to go back there every year for many years in the Spring, to walk for 20 miles on the boardwalk and clear out me old, fuzzy brain. Then it was just overrun by fistfighting prostitutes, homeless mentally ill and a very skanky population in general, so I had to stop going.
It's a heavenly 2 days of male bonding for the dog, who going to stay with the X. Incredibly powerful, room-filling Smelly feet, MMMMMMMMMM. (dog has a foot fetish, which will be satisfied). I, on the other hand, will be breathing fresh, ocean air. Might go fishing for flatties off the jetties, if an old fishing buddy decides to join me for a day.

Knitting classes for September - November at RedLipstick have been posted.

8.09.2002
Working in "stealth" mode on a very interesting project with these incredible designers for Fashion Week in September here in NYC. Can't say too much about it, except that it involves latex rubber and knitting. I thought latex would stick to the needles, but it's surprisingly easy to knit. I'll post pics of these pieces after the show, mid-Sept. Not for the faint of heart!

Rubber Walnuts, 2 roosters and a hen.

Happy to report that the 2 people I've asked to help judge the 2002 Knit Hat Show have agreed to do so. Ranjit Bhatnager and John Szinger are now official! Their bios will be up in the subsite in a few days, as soon as they get over the self-promotional trauma of writing them. ;-> John, Ranjit and I all have radically different taste. We should present an extremely well rounded point of view regarding the hats.

About 100 years ago, when I was a kid, my grandma used to take me shopping on 5th Avenue here in NYC. Most of the great old department stores would have a "Dog Bar" out front, for the pooches of the "Ladies who Lunch". Well, Prospect Heights is coming up, because RedLipstick now has one! Here's our first "patron"on a sultry, summer day. You can't imagine how much fun this is. No-ones started any fights yet. Plenty to go around, free refills. It's weird how the little things you see when you're young make great impressions on you.

Oh come on. While I've enjoyed making winter sweaters for my tiny, short haired dogs, this is going too far. Not all animals enjoy wearing clothes. Isn't it bad enough they're abandoned? Do they have to wear bandanas? Actually, I just remembered that a few years ago I donated the small chihuahua sized sweaters from Wylie, my deceased chi, to a shelter in LA. Shit. Hope it wasn't this one. The woman who contacted me told me they got cold at night. Whatever.

And by the way, scientists have discovered that dogs can count.

Got some great pictures of the (human!) knits I made in the last few weeks. Got them into the computer this am, but it was too damn hot. As soon as it cools off a bit, I'll finish the photoshop thing, and post them.
