A quick reassurance to those entering a hat in the 2002 Knit Hat Show: As long as it's POSTMARKED by the 30th, it will not be rejected because of lateness. I'm sorry I didn't make that distinction. So you still have another whole day to send it! Thanks!
I'm also very pleased to announce that the 2002 Knit Hat Show website will be designed and coded by one of our own, that lovely and talented Crafty Bitch Liz Maryland. Thank You, Liz! 9.27.2002
You've probably already been there, but just in case your not aware of it, Knitty Has Launched!! Fabulous, Squib! An excellent new knitting resource! Can you tell I'm excited?
My eyes are fried, and I don't have the time to do hours of photoshop work, so I'm sorry, but no pics yet. Sending in my intern request to F.I.T. today, so I can knit more and run errands less. Wish me luck. I've got a scary backlog of knitted garments to make. 9.24.2002
Have 4 trade shows to cover today, leaving shortly. I have some great shots of the Gaelyn & Cianfarani latex fashion show last friday, hope to photoshop those shots tonight, and post them up, including the 2 knit latex halters I made for them. What an awesomely beautiful show. You'll see. Hang in there. Gotta get dressed and run now.
BTW, word on the street is that human hat knitters are going to have a little canine competition for the 2002 Knit Hat Show. I've seen it, and it rocks! 9.22.2002
Having a bad day? If you can only see one fashion show this season, make it the Pierrot show. Very, very funny. Stereotypes abound, and then some. Whoever cast this show is genius.

The first entries for the 2002 Knit Hat Show are coming in! They're absolutely beautiful! A reminder: if you'd like to enter, September 30th is the deadline. Thank you! This is really exciting!

I put a big green chalkboard up in the kitchen, and started using that for a list of things to do. It's helping me so much! I love to erase each completed item. I'm way more organized. It's eyelevel. Somehow, it's also a motivator. It's not electronic. It matches the walls. I made more room in my mind.
I'm handknitting a series of scarves in various gauges the long way (sideways), to get vertical stripes in color as well as texture. 9.18.2002
Just got home from an extra long knitting class tonight, this crop of students is really amazing. Each of them learned to cast on, knit and purl, as well as rib, make simple k/p graphs, increase and decrease and cast off in just a few hours. I'm allowing everyone to work on a different project this time, because of the speed at which they're learning, and I'm finding that it's really working out well, because if someone is at a point in their project where they need to learn a new operation, the other 2 will stop and see what's happening, then when they're ready to do that, they've already seen it, and it's easy. Teaching is great. End of story.
Doing quarterly sales tax, knitting the second rubber tank top for the show on Friday, and trying to function efficiently in general. Sort of have things under minimal control. I love it when people come in the shop and say "It must be great to sit around knitting all day". I just laugh. I have to struggle to get knitting time in. Mind you, I'm not complaining. 9.17.2002
RedLipstick gets cited on this porn collectors blog for blogging about knitting and being responsible for making women look dumb. Really made my day. Thank you! Really! I'm going out shopping now! Math is hard!

Knit 5 diamond patterned tucked 7g scarves yesterday am. Knitting rubber garments this am and tommorrow, they're due on Monday. I'll post pictures of those after the show.
Warning: Exquisitely dull Personal Twaddle: Thinking about starting a new year, which today is for me,(bday). Thinking about last year, which was the second worst in my entire life. I'm feeling pretty good about it, though, because I made it through it with a minimum of damage and plenty of positive aftereffects, and I know that my fighting spirit is alive and well and now really fucking experienced! ;-> Spent extra time in the park this am (around 7), lots of dogs there today, beautiful weather, and I went to the greenmarket afterwards. I just ate an apple cider donut, no sugar. The sound of my knitting machine makes my kitten go to sleep like a narcoleptic. I don't know if this is funny or not. 9.13.2002
Worked out a new sweater pattern with a shrunken kimono short sleeve, and a body shaped mostly by stitch structure. Going to be knitting dresses out of this shape also. Taking pictures today. 2 new hats. Knitting 7g merino tuck stitch scarves and ribbed mitts this am.

Finally, FINALLY I have some time to actually design some clothes. As usual, there are alot of projects going on, and I'm in the juggler's seat. All self-induced, of course. Some exciting developments down the pike, if all goes according to plan.
Realized I've had the shop for 2 years! Time flies when you're extremely busy (and having fun). One of my acquaintances who opened a housewares shop last year just went out of business end of August. She's a sweet woman, and I feel bad for her, I know how hard she worked to keep her shop going. It's about vision. If you do not have a clear vision, everything else is meaningless. It informs absolutely EVERYTHING. Every decision you make. It's the glue that holds it all together. I think her's was, if not exactly lacking, not precise, or too vague. You've got to be exclusively self-motivated. If you seek or need outside direction or validation then you're in the wrong line of work. It's kind of like how dogs can tell if you're scared of them, and then they'll intimidate you a bit. Retail is the same exact thing. When Alexander the Great visited Diogenes and asked whether he could do anything for the famed teacher, Diogenes replied: 'Only stand out of my light.' Perhaps some day we shall know how to heighten creativity. Until then, one of the best things we can do for creative men and women is to stand out of their light. -John W. Gardner, author and educator (1912-2002) The above quote illustrates in a much nicer way what I try to tell my friends: Help me, or please just get out of my way. Dog and Kitten 3 ring circus endlessly amusing. What great stress relief. Knitting being worked on: Merino or cashmere winter Partial Doily tops, built into wool jersey dolman sleeved bases. I'm also doing some smocking, generally onto jersey or 1x1 ribbed grounds. Have some great leftover neoprene from last freelance gig (NDA, so please don't ask), which will be doing duty as straps for 7g a-line knitted dresses. Kimono sleeved tops and dresses with neoprene mini-corset lace-up belts. More 7g fingerless mitts, geelong and merino asymmetrical shoulder awnings, this year with stripes, some cowl necks, some w/hoods. Ok, pay bills, make phone calls, eat something, then I can work. 9.04.2002
Burnt to a crisp. Rained all weekend, and I missed the West Indian day parade, was hoping for some jerk chicken, so will get jerk patties on the way home tonight to compensate. Freelancing anyway at home all mon & tue. No knitting done. Ready for another vacation, but Beginning knitting class starts tonight.
Mr. Murphy ( my 20 lb minpin) got his own kitten a few days ago. She's 4 and a half weeks old, and it took them only a matter of hours to "fall in love". He puts her whole head in his mouth when they're playing, and at first I thought he'd get overexcited and bite down, but that hasn't happened yet, and she always comes running back for more. He nibbles her miniscule ears and feet. She's a tiny little thing, very rambunctious and willing to keep teasing him all day, so I feel less bad about leaving him at home during the day. They're quite a pair. My camera doesn't do "action shots" so it's hard to get a picture, but I'll try to get one when they're sleeping heads together. Beyond cute. Just hope she's a mouser when she grows up. I just caught the third one yesterday, and I'm getting tired of it. |
