There are no words to express how sick I am of corrupt politics. Also shaking out is the realization that people are in it for themselves, ONLY, on both sides.

1.30.2004
Here's democracy at work: Mr. Bloomberg, NYC Mayor, Obfuscating in Print. And you know what? When I found this last night online, and I posted an opinion, with my name and address, I was assured it would be posted "in a few minutes". See it there, underneath? No? Me neither. Sent an email this am wondering where my opinion was. Received no answer. NO-ONES opinion, and I'm sure there are many, is posted. Bet they got swamped.

It's very bizarre to be sending out emails all day to politicians and some media, and getting no response. It's easy to tell which media outlets have been bought.

I'm going to make it my business to campaign against Bloomberg.

RESCHEDULED COMMUNITY BOARD #2 MEETING:

WHEN: Tuesday, February 3rd, 6pm
WHERE: Brooklyn Technical High School
29 Fort Greene Place (between Fulton and Dekalb)
718-596-5410 (CB2)

Excellent! That's my "day off". Thank you CB2 for being so accomodating.

------------------------------------------------------
On the opposite end of the emotion spectrum, very excited to see that Edward Tufte may be working on a new book, "Beautiful Evidence". I have signed copies of his first three {attended his seminar a few years ago}, they are among my most treasured books.

My life is becoming increasingly extreme and bizarre. What I would like is some boring, stable, coasting time with no operatic drama, say 6 months or so. I always wanted grey hair before I became elderly, which I think is beautiful. I'm getting my wish.

1.28.2004
Here's a Newsday article about the RAT{ner}, and his method of throwing money at what he wants. Read about the tax breaks and public subsidies. Notice the woman he paid off after condemning her home on the current Metrotech site, also using eminent domain. She says how fair he is, AFTER A FUCKING FOUR YEAR FIGHT. She had to sign a confidentiality agreement, now she's shilling for him as best she can. Is this a case of Stockholm Syndrome, or what?

FOUR YEARS. Hey, dodobird! What's four years of stress and wasted time worth to you? What a great guy!

If he was so great, he would have come to the community FIRST, worked with us develop that stretch of the neighborhood, not left us totally in the dark and getting our information from press conferences and news stories. He wouldn't be trying to dwarf our neighborhood with out of context, ugly moneymaking high rise buildings paid for by taxpayers and wouldn't be destroying already existing homes and businesses.

He's just dreamy! Can you tell I'm pissed?

Just got interviewed in the shop by a reporter and photographer from the New York Post, the story should come out on Sunday. It will be about businesses who are on the periphery of this unholy nightmare, and how we'll be affected.

Please buy the Post on Sunday, NOT THE TIMES, and support objective reporting.

When I got into the shop today, I was visited by Patti Hagan from PHAC, accompanied by 2 filmmakers who are doing a documentary about it.

Just in time to be photographed, I neurotically cut my bangs really short this am. :-> Oh well.

BITCHIN. {haven't said that in years}

The community board Meeting tonight has been canceled "due to snow". Read on {from PHAC email I rec'd}:

"Call it a "snow emergency."

Call it the fact that the city's schools are closed today. (We've heard both
reasons.)

Or, you could call it an unwillingness to face the residents who planned to
show up tonight and bear silent witness against the Downtown Brooklyn
Development Plan and its eminent domain abuse. (We know that CB2 was concerned about
our presence, because they've contacted us several times, trying to talk us out
of coming.)

Please note: Two weeks ago, 400 people showed up at a CB2 meeting during a
severe weather advisory (ice, temperatures below zero, harsh winds, media
reports that people should not go out). PHAC and other residents had asked CB2 to
cancel that meeting, but were told, "We can't do that. It wouldn't be fair to
those who are planning to come."

However, tonight-with moderate temperatures, and snow that's melting as we
write-the meeting is abruptly cancelled. Conditions are apparently too
dangerous to allow the general public to come out and observe what Ed Weintrob,
publisher of The Brooklyn Papers, has called "the largest land grab in Brooklyn's
history."

We've been told that we'll be notified when the meeting is rescheduled-it has
to take place before February 9th-but, just in case, please call CB2
yourselves at the end of this week and ask them for the new date. The number is
718-596-5410.

Thank you to everyone who planned to attend tonight's meeting. (If you can't
get in touch with someone you invited, we will be there to thank them in
person for showing up.) And thank you for keeping democracy alive."

Community Board #2 meeting is tonight! 6pm. Please see info in post below. I'm looking forward to meeting F to F many people I've only emailed with.

Have received hundreds and hundreds of virus emails over the past few days, just like most of you, I suppose. I don't even download them, just delete them on the server. If you've sent me an email and I haven't responded, it may have been deleted by mistake, send again, although I'm pretty careful and do look at all of them. My eyes are glazed at this point. I'm on a Mac too, haha!

Mr. Markowitz, our Borough President, has declined so far to respond to my second email as well.

Off to wash and block, shovel snow, and open up.

1.27.2004
If anyone would like to send Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz an email: I was told by his office this afternoon to use this address:

dbrill@brooklynbp.org

not this one:

askmarty@brooklynbp.org

There is a very important Community Board #2 meeting tommorrow night {Wednesday} and we need to have people there, it's very important to make our dissenting NOStadium presence known, and although the public will not be allowed to speak, I believe we can make loud fart noises. Half kidding! {Yes, pretty pathetic, I know, but you've gotta fight with what you have, right? And it's not billions of dollars.} Here's the info:

> > WHEN: Wednesday, January 28th, 6pm
> > WHERE: Brooklyn Technical High School
> > 29 Fort Greene Place (between Fulton and Dekalb)
> > 718-596-5410 (CB2)

Please come if at all possible!

Spent the day having a clay facial and knitting/finishing shoulder awnings and wool flowers. Very relaxing.

1.26.2004
Tons of great articles today telling it like it is regarding the proposed Nets stadium complex, such as Mike Lupica's for the Daily News. I emailed Mayor Bloomberg, Marty Markowitz, Schumer and Daniel Stern last Friday regarding the fact that my shop will be very negatively affected, and have not gotten any response yet. I've heard from other residents that Markowitz responds to them within hours. I'll give them a week.

I want to make clear that I'm not anti-development for that site, quite the opposite, but an illegal land-grab on this gargantuan scale that destroys homes, businesses and thriving, organically reclaimed neighborhoods and then provides huge profits for an individual at taxpayers expense, while at the same time driving me into bankruptcy is impossible to support. Impossible.

I'm pretty alone in the fact that the building that houses the shop is not mine, and is not going to be demolished. It's just going to be rendered nonviable as a business location, since that block of 6th Avenue which is now a thoroughfare between Park Slope and Fort Green will become a dead end next to a huge construction site for many years. But first my customer base will be drummed out, and I'm definitely a neighborhood shop. It's half a block away from the start of the planned demolition on Dean Street. Well, the hell with small, unique business in Brooklyn, eh Mr. Mayor? Bring on Hooters, Starbucks and Red Lobster!

1.25.2004
Changed the circular knitting classes to making ponchos instead of sweaters, which are really alot more fun.

I feel weary. Bone-tired. Looking forward to the next two days "off".

1.24.2004
Knitting classes are resuming in February, for all you kind knitters who've been requesting them. Please see the schedule here, and try to register as soon as you can, as there's a 8 person class limit.

Have to balance out the political hooey with some fun.

1.23.2004
Thank You to journalist Bob Raissman for having the balls to call this scam what it is. Read it here:
Nets' proposed move to Brooklyn all about money - and politics

Today Ratner was publicly making noises about how he wants to "work with the community". Could he possibly be any more full of shit? Sure, as long as we just get the fuck out of the way, rollover and give up our homes and businesses so he can profit. Yeah. That's "working together".

The more I learn about "media spin", the more frightening it is to see what's said, how it's reported, and who's obviously blowing who. The rich old boys club strikes again.

Well, my mood has changed from mild depression/oppressed from this am to pretty energized. The shop has, for the time being become community central regarding the proposed stadium complex, and I've been able to hook people up, disseminate information, quell or pass on rumors, and in general talk with people all day long. We were a neighborhood before, but what's happening now is incredible. Today at work started with a visit from a brilliant former news reporter from CNN, the beautiful and intelligent M.: she gave me excellent tips on dealing with politicians and the system in general. Thank you!

Not making much money, but taking freelance to fill in the gap, no big deal. It's worth it.

The people trying to raze this 'hood don't understand yet that we're a force to reckoned with, not a bunch of drug-addled welfare recipients. I guess they're going to find out.

Other, deeply sad news, Bob Keeshan who created, WAS, Captain Kangaroo, died today. I grew up watching him, I adored him. I loved Mr. GreenJeans, and Bunny Rabbit, I especially love carrots to this day because of Bunny Rabbit, who was only a non-speaking hand puppet. That was pure innocence. R.I.P. Captain.

Not feeling good today, I don't have the extra energy for politics, what a jumbo load of horseshit it all is, heavily skewed in the favor of who's got the money. Time to reprise a graph from 2002:
broken heart graph

Writing more letters today to NBA owners, who must approve the sale, and newspapers. Warning: It rarely pays to be an early adopter or pioneer in this country anymore. You don't get rewarded, you get crushed. Yet, I don't know how else to live. Going through some changes these days, for sure.

This particular situation is months old, I didn't mention it, because New York politics is hideous and corrupt to me, and I deal with it only when I must, which in the neighborhood I chose to live and work in, is sadly, appallingly often. We all thought it wouldn't get this far, but of course the stadium complex is obviously getting railroaded through, and now we must seriously fight it for our neighborhood as we know it to not get destroyed. For ordinary citizens with fulltime jobs and a life, spending time, money and energy on this is a miserable drain. Want to read about knitting here? Wish I could oblige more often.

1.22.2004
Shitty day at the shop discussing politics with my freaked out neighbors, and writing letters to local politicians. My neighbors have been supportive of me, and I will return the favor as best I can.

I feel positively sick to my stomach right now. Just read that the owners of the N.J. Nets have decided to sell the team to evil and greedy developer Bruce Ratner, which is really bad news for Prospect Heights, where I live and have 2 businesses. This is a very stressful issue we've been dealing with and fighting against for a few months. The city plans to illegally evoke Eminent Domain to seize about 7 acres of privately owned property, demolish the homes and businesses on that property, and build a stadium and inappropriately large high rises there for Ratners profit. As you may know, Eminent Domain is supposed to be for public good, {power stations, roads, etc} not private profit, and the land to be seized must be deemed "blighted". That the city will determine that luxury coops, condos and lofts are blighted is another illegal aspect.

Bad news for me is that the shop is less than half a block from the proposed stadium. The buildings to be demolished house 96% of my customer base, and will turn my section of 6th ave into a dead end right next to a huge construction site for many years.

The people in those buildings to be demolished are my friends and neighbors and have been extremely supportive of me over the last 3 years. This is a very congested area already. Bringing in 19,000 sports fans on a regular basis is going to be a disaster in terms of garbage, noise and pollution for the neighborhood, and will destroy us. We are a neighborhood of small buildings, 1 to 5 stories high, a very human scale.

I'm so fucking tired of the city dumping on Prospect Heights. This used to be a dangerous crack neighborhood, that changed over 5 years ago, but the city just won't acknowledge it, because that would be inconvenient.

If you're at all interested in our local fight, more info can be found Here.

My options are to move the shop ASAP, which I don't have the money for, or just close down. Tough titty for me, eh? There goes over 3 years of hard work, and my life savings. I'm not in debt, and built this business with no backers, just my own resources and hard work. I have no intention of going into debt with a loan to keep this going.

I've fought like hell over the past 3 years to make it here, RedLipstick was the first shop on this little strip of 6th avenue, and others soon followed. I've been personally thanked by the cops in the 78th Precinct across the street for coming here and making the block nicer.

I'm now being run out of business by someone who doesn't live here, or give a shit about anything except his own profit margin. Why don't you build it in your neighborhood? But knock your own house down first!

FUCK YOU BRUCE RATNER. Also your bought and paid for puppet, Borough President Marty Markowitz, and even Mayor Bloomberg, who heartily and publicly backs this idiotic, illegal plan.

Happy Year of the Monkey! The apes are in control.

1.21.2004
Sugarzine did a survey of Brooklyn shops, and RedLipstick got good marks! It was nice to be included! So if you're planning to check out this side of the river, Manhattan girls, put on your walking shoes, print this baby out and get rolling. She really got around and hit the best shops.

This is kind of exciting as the shop hardly ever gets press. It's nice to be reminded occasionally I'm not laboring exclusively in my own little bubble.

raglan sleeve variable 1
The first raglan variable in merino. #1 is the bottom of the sleeve, gently sloping forward like a wave, {exposing the armpit} thank you Mr. Galliano! {I have to be careful what I look at because what goes in comes out again, although I meant it this time.} The asymmetry is deliberate, as I find it more interesting than rigid adherence to the grid. Double decreases were used, {reversed on the second sleeve}, and decrease sequences were started at 3 points immediately to counteract the extra picked-up stitches, the shoulder cap, front and back sleeve bottom {armpit}.

#2 is slightly forward of the exact top of the sleeve, there's a point there, because I'm going to add some "suspension" action now with crochet. That's another line of investigation that's been developing over the past 2 years. The themes, of course, mix. After this is finished, washed and blocked, I'll shoot it on a mannequin. There's alot of shaping going on in every section that's not mentioned, those are the secrets to RedLipstick fit. Humans are not flat and there are no straight edges, damn it! We're curved and circular. Really dislike patterns that are like an envelope with straight sides.

I frogged once, not enough decreases. Must stay away from '80's puff thing happening. This is going to be fun to knit circularly, which is next on the agenda. Shortrowing is another technique that's totally appropriate here.

1.20.2004
Article from the NYT {reg.req.} about John Galliano's "design method". This guy is a severe artist and a showman, and I *love* his work. I have a problem with Impractical clothing though. This is theatre. Seriously expensive theatre.

So today's post is about my own design method. The theme I'm investigating is not Egyptian. :->, but a newly engineered version of the simple raglan sleeve. Making the bodies on 7g machine in a merino texture stitch, and picking up + casting on with a #2 or #3 US needle:
raglan sleeve construction
either from A to B to C to D, or A to D to C to B. Cast-on stitches will make a bridge between B and C, or A and D. The engineered part is working out decreases similar to domino knitting, although the shape this must conform to is not a square or rectangle. There will be probably be 2 decrease columns as opposed to the traditional one, {although I will play with just one, but mathematically that probably won't decrease fast enough because you've picked up an extra side. Domino squares pick up one side, and cast-on the same length} and the final shape is a flattened cone with it's top removed. Most likely, I'll start with 2 decrease columns, knit till they meet in the middle, then reduce to one, making a Y shaped decrease. Variations ad infinitum.

Below is the simple HK sleeve and bib treatment that started this line of investigation {still needs washing and blocking}.
raglan inspiration
You can imagine there are dozens of interesting variables possible. And ALL of them will be wearable. No internal suspenders. hehe

1.19.2004
For those of you who've been trying to access The Knitting Curmudgeon the last few days, and have not been able to, Mar has moved her blog here: http://www.knitzme.blogspot.com/.

UPDATE: SweetAction Magazine for women has arrived at the shop! They'll be available on Wednesday, or you can order one online direct from Robin. I'm going to have to request some older "boys" in the next issue to suit us ladies that like 'em a little long in the tooth and grey on the noggin. :-> It's cold outside, and yarn only takes a gal so far, eh? Well, sometimes that Noro stuff with the angora...Oh, nevermind.

Oh Ladies! Looks like Sweet Action is almost ready to go! My shop will carry it, waiting for the first shipment!! I already carry Robyns beautiful handcast sterling cocktail sword necklaces.

Well, last week was from hell. Pipes at home got fixed, both the hot and cold had broken. Got the cat spray smell out of the shop, finally. Had other very serious issues not mentioned here also resolved. Jeeeez!

Making clothes today and tommorrow for the shop, basically laying low and staying off the ice outside. Have a freelance graphic design gig, just a small one, I'm knocking out this am. Getting back on track and out of crisis mode, which is all too familiar. I don't even get upset anymore, I guess that's a good thing?

Ruffling seriously today, the trinity of my ruffler, embroidery machine and sewing machines are getting married today. How much can I embellish one garment? :-> We'll see. Doing finishing work on some knit suspension tops. Got one drying and blocking now, will go in the online shop so youc an see it, if I don't sell it first.

1.17.2004
Along with many other people in Brooklyn, we have a broken pipe in the basement today. Knitting is becoming a pleasant, distant memory.

1.16.2004
Thank you for the info, Dani! I spent the morning doing research, making calls, getting witnesses {noses!}and I'm happy to report that the situation is now under control. Smell has been removed. I offered to settle with her out of court for the days I was unable to use the shop, she started arguing, so I may still try arbitration or a small claims thing. Lessons to be learned from this:

DO YOUR RESEARCH. Document everything. Get witnesses. Don't get mad. Cry only at night in front of your dog. Be strong, and have the info.

This is a prime example of the ridiculous things I deal with, really way too often, and don't post about {usually}. As a last resort, I post what I did this am.

UPDATE: Spoke to a lawyer friend of mine: now researching Small Claims Court, getting witnesses from the police station across the street to come and take a vomit-making whiff, figuring an average the shop makes per day, and reading my lease to see if I can take both of them to court.

Yet another learning experience.

My shop is closed for a second day, I'm on the way there now to post signs in the window that say:

{HIDDEN}
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyone have any legal advice for me? The situation is appalling, and of course I have no source of income because of this. I almost threw up when I went in yesterday, the ammonia smell was so strong. Our stores are separated by a very poorly built wall, and I'd had major problems with this stupid woman over the past 2.5 years because of chain smoking and other foul odors. This takes the (urinal) cake, though. Really, I'm open to any suggestion.

I've had enough, and am ready to pursue legal action.

1.14.2004
I'm going through major changes, prompted by over three years of exhaustion and stress and not much carefree existence. Once I make a decision, it's done, and my mind works tirelessly to figure out the logistics. Sleeping is annoying. Sorry to be secretive, but I have to right now. Focused on other interests, like automotive interior design (learning about it, it's really too late for me to get an industrial design degree to practice it), textile R&D, etc. and my life will have to transition to accomodate that. Transition it will. In a few months exhilaration will replace exhaustion. My brain needs some heavy duty exercise before it atrophies. I want to do R&D again. And I want to buy my own fucking house. All mine.

So things will evolve.

BTW, bought a copy of "Stitch & Bitch" by Deb Stoller, because it's important to me to be supportive of labors of love like this, and I know and love some of the knitters who's work appears in it. {Like Ellen and Echo and Annie and Meema and Sonya} It's quite comprehensive, and I was impressed. Do the very simple patterns interest me? No not really, but I highly recommend this book for any beginner. There are some very nice sweaters further in. If I didn't like it, as any regular reader of this blog knows, I would either ignore or trash it. Recommended!

1.13.2004
I made some huge decisions today, which will be revealed over the next 6 weeks. Change is good. I have alot of planning to do.

1.12.2004
Johnson Ruffler in action!

Finally have time to set-up and test the Johnson Ruffler! Amazing. Much better results than the Hague linker I got a while ago, which is a non-working piece of shit. Avoid them.

On the agenda today - ruffle for a while, knit for a while, finish and post knitting class schedule, join Ingrid for dinner tonight. A very nice day off. Tommorrow is already booked: Breakfast with Ranjit, then going to 4 trade shows, simply exhausting, so I have to make the most of my time home today.

BTW: Best place in Brooklyn to drunkenly make out with someone at the bar: Freddies. Having fun lately. Really, in addition to a hangover (HATE drinking, that's it for this year) I felt like a bit of an ass the next day. Later found out almost EVERY ONE (and I have plenty) of my girlfriends have done the same thing, some numerous times and with different people. Unwittingly, I seem to have joined the club {The P. H. Roundheels}. Obviously a rite of passage here in Prospect Heights.

1.10.2004
cat bites dog, dog bites plushie

Cat bites dog, jealous of his relentless plushie fetish. It's a regular circus around here. Kittie's got a name, finally! Ever see Goldfinger? Remember how Sean Connery pronounces "Pussy Galore"? Puschy. That's her new name, she lives up to it, and even appears to like it. It's also fun to contort your lips like that, although I may tire of it eventually.

Obviously, still losing it, bigtime. Just as cold this am. I'm probably mentally functioning on the level of a clever 6 year old today.

1.09.2004
Back 3 days. Stress is back too. It's bitterly, brutally cold outside.

Working on a new class schedule this afternoon {if there is time} at the shop.

UPDATE::: WARNING, SEVERE WHINING AHEAD: I'm fucking losing it. I am frozen, my brain has stopped functioning, and I don't want anyone to come into my shop because they have to open the door to get in, which plunges me into an envelope of frozen air. WARM THE FUCK UP. PLEASE. SOON. I feel a fever coming on too. Shit.

I used to do this thing when I was a kid...when I had to write anything, which I never liked to do anyway, I would leave out the vowels to make my physical ability to get the words out keep up with my brain. I haven't deliberately done this for decades, but when I'm very tired or FUCKING FROZEN, like now, that comes back, involuntarily. It's a little embarrassing, because I take pride in being a decent speller, without spellcheck. Whatever. I NEED HEAT>

The point is I just can't even write a receipt without doing that today..

Made it this far, what a trooper! You deserve something amusing: Field Guide to Gestures, How to Identify and Interpret Every Gesture Known to Man. Or how about some Acid Trip Drawings? I'm rather partial to #6.

1.06.2004
The beautiful Louise Brooks
The haircut of choice for fashionable knitters in 2004, the fabulous Louise Brooks. Mine doesn't lay that flat though, and me bangies are considerably shorter, retarded kindergarten style. hehe, which is ok, goes better with tats.

One day left of vacation, and I have to spend it cleaning house and shopping in the city. On the plus side, my shoulders are about 2 inches lower, skin's looking great, and I've lost 6 lbs, am very well rested and have a new haircut that I love. Anna and I had a 5.5 hour marathon at Ikea yesterday, driven there by her boyfriend Alan and his VW microbus. She had to furnish her new apartment, and I got some lovely grey open shelving for the shop, which my friend Karl helped me put together today. (thanks, sweetie!) Those meatballs have gotten even MORE disgusting, if you can believe it. I still had to have them as a reminder of my visit to Sweden 100 years ago.

Stopped "smoking" for a while, just for balance. Very lucid. Super productive.

Still fiddling with at least 3 designs for the online shop, this is getting stupid now, but as a former art director, I'm afraid I've reverted to that anal pixel counting freak I used to be, when it really mattered somehow, and I still want to spend more time on the design. At some point though, probably in about a week, that's got to stop and progress on to optimizing and coding. I'll let someone else choose between them, and then just build the damned thing. That's what happens sometimes to me when I have no externally imposed deadline. BTW, would you like to learn how to select perfectly matching color combinations?

Just wanted to note that I've met someone very, very interesting. Very. :-> Hot as a pistol, sweet as sugar and damn it, I deserve it! There's a cheshire style grin on this kitty tonight. And he's not a drag queen! Perhaps this is my reward for paying 5 years of miserable dues in that department. Thank you Gramps.

And by the way, Thank you J, {from Simon & Schuster} for the Hannukah gift! I was the lucky recipient of "Emergence, The Collected Lives of Ants, Brains, Cities and Software". It happens to be a very excellent book, I'm about 3/4 done.

I was also serenaded {via telephone} with a live violin performance. Awesome. Sending some Kisses, D. Go check out his absolutely BITCHIN aran in progress!

I got my hair professionally cut off today, alot of it, about 6 inches. It's still too long. Kept the B.P. bangs, but had them cut as short as possible before they stuck straight out like a shelf.

A question for you: Does a '20's bob make your ass look bigger? Bob's calling my name. Might have to just go for it. Pictures after the butchery is through, if you even remotely give a fuck.

New Years Resolution: Stop Slumping even if I like it. Expose the back of my milky neck as incentive.

Enjoying "vacation" immensely, mostly hanging out with friends I'm just too goddamned busy to hang with usually. Doing finishing {ponchos, suspension shoulder 7g tops}, and working on eshop design. Going to the movies in the afternoon, which is incredibly wicked.

Paying bills and then indulging a bit on ebay to balance it out...just got a Johnson Ruffler, makes billions of yards of ruffles as fast as you can feed it fabric.

I foresee alot of ruffles on spring and summer clothes in 2004.
