We're planning the first doggie photo shoot sooner rather than later, and I'm working on those particular sweaters right now. Modeling this session will be 2 mini-doxies, Killer and Bella, and my own Mr. Murphy {Bed}, who's a monster mini-pin, {a 22 pounder, to be exact. Yes, he's a whopper}. If it's at all possible or feasible, I'll post some "outtakes" to whet your dog-sweater-knitting appetite. These three should be adorable together.

This is starting to really be fun! I *love* knitting with Aurora 8. {Karabella merino- delicious!} Planning ultra-girly pinkness for you, dear Phoebe!! {Hi Carrie & Jen!}

UNSOLICITED RECOMMENDATION: I ordered "Unexpected Knitting" by Debbie New {Schoolhouse Press} based on the description....WOW!!!! She's amazing. Really smart work, and so very beautiful. Straddles the line between art and craft, and absolutely makes you look at knitting in a new light {extremely hard for me}. A beautiful, brilliant knitter and book. A must-own, as far as I'm concerned. Invented new notation systems, and her sense of construction is positively Escheresque. Debbie New, I thank you for writing this, and I love you!

Sounds of New York. Ellen, this is for you.

Swatching away on dog sweaters. The most irritating thing about writing this book is having to search out commercial yarns that are carried everywhere {I use industrial coned yarns almost exclusively, even for handknitting}.. What a BORE. On the other hand, Karabella Yarns has become a sponsor of the book, so I get to use that beautiful stuff. Not exclusively, as there are a few hard-wearing patterns in here that call for rougher stuff, like Bartletts.. I'm happy to report that Denise Interchangable Knitting Needles is also a sponsor, which means my sample knitters will each receive a kit, gratis! I'm also writing some unusual patterns that actually REQUIRE Denises, as you'll knit sideways and change the needle head to a different size at a certain point in the pattern. I LOVE those kits, have been using them for over 20 years.

Oh, I'm having an interesting time.

It's been a bit of a struggle to RAMP UP my production, when summer dictates a RAMP DOWN. No matter. Deadline WILL BE MET.

Writing, designing in the am, then running a busy shop. Researching Kevlar. I don't think I can spare words {really the mental energy needed to determine an understandable composition of them} to use here till the hump on this phase is has been gotten over. Will be posting photos.

The Theo's looked like crap on me. I gave them to a friend of mine, a Hasidic scholar studying to be a cantor. They found their home.

Planted a blueberry bush and morning glories.

Focusing on balancing a full plate of projects/busy shop for the next 3 months. Everything is great. Haven't been interested in wallowing in philosophical reflection. Looking in, not out. Am enjoying this period.

Soundtrack: Cowsills, Vonda Shepard, Left Banke, The Four Tops, Billy Bragg, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Ricki Lee Jones, Bruce Springsteen, Marshall Crenshaw, Badly Drawn Boy, Elliott Smith - all separate versions of --->Walk Away Renee.

Cowsills - I Love the Flower Girl

Morrissey - Handsome Devil, I Am the Sun, The More You Ignore Me, Every Day is Like Sunday

Loretta Lynn - Blue Kentucky Moon

Nellie McKay - Toto Dies

Prince - Get Off, Kiss, Little Red Corvette, Raspberry Corvette, I Would Die For You

My shop is closed until next Wednesday, I'm on "vacation". Working on developing an efficient system to get a huge load of work done in a tight timeframe. Researching/organizing various topics, and deep cleaning and ruthlessly purging my apartment. Will get one prone beach day, and one wandering city day. Will spend one day rearranging and cleaning the shop. One day on the bike all over Brooklyn.

Scrubbed the kitchen raw on Tuesday, and now mentally preparing to go tear the bathroom apart. My apartment is like a textile factory that someone lives in.

I hope it rains today.

my pretentious new glasses

In celebration of signing my book contract, I've treated myself to a pair of Theo frames {ok, got them on Ebay, not that bad at all}. These are some of the most pretentious glasses on earth, from Belgian designer Patric Hoet. The ones I found, the "Prince" model, are far more normal looking than his other styles. Quintessential architect frames. Since it became necessary to wear glasses for closeup work, I 've begun to collect them. Hope these look ok on, they seem sort of weird and Victorian, which I like. The first consideration is, of course, whether they'll go with red lipstick. :-> Light copper? oh yes they will.

I have very mixed feelings about these, I always feel slightly uncomfortable talking to somone wearing extreme glasses, hope these pass some of that oddness right back. They're very "duct tape holding them together", stylewise, eh?
